Press Release

The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued today (February 7, 2025) the following statement:

The Communist Party of India strongly condemns the recent acts of vandalism targeting the house of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other historical monuments in Bangladesh. These attacks are part of a disturbing pattern aimed at erasing the progressive and secular legacy of Bangladesh while strengthening fundamentalist and reactionary forces. It appears that the events that took place have indirect backing from the present caretaker government.

After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government due to massive protests and the subsequent establishment of a caretaker government led by Muhammad Yunus, it was expected that there would be a smooth transition to a democratically elected government through elections. However, instead of facilitating this transition, it has only strengthened extremist outfits, posing a grave threat to the democratic and secular fabric of Bangladesh.

The CPI has full confidence that all Left, democratic, and secular forces in Bangladesh will unite to resist this growing wave of extremism before it is too late. At the same time, we emphasize the urgent need for greater unity and understanding among democratic forces, both within Bangladesh and between the people of Bangladesh and India. The fight against fundamentalism is not just a struggle for the present but a necessity for the future of democracy, peace, and pluralism in South Asia.

The CPI calls upon the Bangladesh government to take strong and decisive action to stop such acts of vandalism and protect the country’s historical and secular heritage. Failure to do so will raise serious questions about its commitment to democracy and accountability.

The CPI urges the Government of India to take appropriate and necessary measures along the border areas to prevent any spillover of extremist activities into Indian territory. It is imperative that steps be taken to ensure security while maintaining India’s long-standing commitment to solidarity with the people of Bangladesh.
