PAN cards refer to the Permanent Account Number issued by the India’s Tax office [similar sounding ’paan’ (in Urdu, Bengali) refers to betel leaf chewing which is popular in South Asia] and Aadhaar ID cards are a very controversial biometric ID cards that are being forced on people without appropriate public debate or proper legal safeguards. The government of India recently made it mandatory for every taxpayer to link their PAN card with the Aadhaar card.
