PAKISTAN INDIA PEOPLES’ FORUM FOR PEACE & DEMOCRACY (India)

PRESS STATEMENT

May 14, 2014

Pakistan-India Peoples’ Forum for Peace & Democracy (PIPFPD) strongly condemns the brutal attack in Karachi where 47 people including women were gunned down. The attackers targetted an Ismaili community bus. Jundullah, an anti-shia militia and a splinter group of Tehrik-e-Taliban, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The killing of Ismailis is a clear case of sectarian killing. The attackers came in 3 motor-cycles, entered bus and fired indiscriminately resulting in death of 47 people. The community bus that runs on a daily basis with fixed timings had around 60 people travelling at that time in the bus. The attackers managed to flee after the attack.

We condemn the way consistent attacks are taking place against common people in various places in Pakistan, whether it is mass attacks or sectarian violence or attacks against progressive thinkers. Just recently, rights activist Sabeen Mahmud was killed and before that Advocate Rashid Rehman who worked consistently for propagating peoples rights was also killed. The different kinds of cases of attacks are only increasing without any action being taken.

We appeal to the Pakistan government to take stern action against the attackers and the forces that propagate a philosophy of hatred and violence.
