STATEMENT

We express our shock and outrage at the statement of Samajwadi Party MP, Jaya Bachchan, in the Rajya Sabha yesterday calling for public lynching of the culprits in the Hyderabad rape case.

Instead of demanding faster adjudication and implementation, that a lawmaker recommends violence inside the Parliament is shameful, to say the least. Rousing public sentiment for revenge is a new low in India’s parliamentary archives. Any retributive reaction has no place in a civilized society, no matter how heinous the crime.

The progressive movements in India have earlier spoken out against the death penalty. We repeat our stand against it, and would like to remind us that even the much-respected Justice Verma Committee report too was unequivocally against the death penalty, even in the rarest of the rare rape cases.
