November 2014

Faster environmental approvals and land acquisition feature on most newspapers’ "top five" priority lists for India’s economic reforms. But will these reforms actually achieve what they’re intended to achieve?

This month, the India Study Group’s Thematic Briefing takes a closer look at the issue. We find that the current reforms may actually increase the risks to the banking system, the levels of social conflict and the wastage of natural resources. We also find that they will do little to address India’s infrastructure problems.

Coordinated by the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, the India Study Group is a collaboration of professionals from diverse fields: journalism, law, civil society, and the corporate world. We provide concise briefings based on detailed, on the ground, rooted analysis.

We were formed to explore questions that aren’t usually asked. We hope we can help you get past the cliches and shed light on the new India.
